Mini Words is a programme designed to help Early Years Children develop early language skills by using immersive, active learning techniques.
In recent years, and with lockdown playing a big part, communication skills in the very youngest children have seen a decline. There are increasing schools of thought that consider technology to have played a large part in this decline too, as children are sometimes left in solitary situations to ‘amuse themselves’ using tech. This inevitably has a detrimental effect on their ability to communicate with others and interact with their peers.
The structured activities are written by teachers and created to provide children with fun and simple stimuli, in the form of picture mats within game-based lessons.
Activities are designed to develop; descriptive language, expressive and receptive vocabulary, initial letter sounds, fluency, and ‘serve and return’ discussions. The content is specifically created in a way that incorporates the Early Learning Goals that are part of the Early Years Framework and help support children’s literacy, communication and physical development
All plans follow a simple format for groups of up to eight pupils, and a minimum of one adult, to lead the lessons. Lessons encourage interaction and peer support at their core. The formats allow for simplicity of setting up and delivering lessons, as well as repetition for pupils, which is the bedrock of Early Years learning.
Language and communication are essential aspects of reading and writing development and Mini Words is a perfect way to build on classroom learning in a fun and engaging format.
